Texting While Driving Penalties Have Increased

Conviction of Texting while Driving causes large fines and demerit points
Texting While Driving is Against the Law

Texting while driving penalties have increased in Ontario.

It is against the law in Ontario to text while driving.    Texting while driving is dangerous and can be fatal! Being convicted of texting while driving costs you large fines, multiple demerit points and your car insurance premiums to increase, and, in some instances, your carrier to no longer insure you.  Receiving demerit points can put you into the high risk auto insurance category.

On June 2nd the province of Ontario passed legislation increasing penalties for drivers who text or use a handheld phone while driving.    The new legislation increases the penalty to a Maximum $1,000 fine and three demerit points for drivers who text, email or talk on handheld phones while driving.

This means that fines for distracted drivers will be between $300 to $1,000, plus three demerit points.Texting while driving is dangerous.   You could be putting the lives of yourself and others at risk!

According to OPP statistics, distracted driving fatalities in Ontario surpassed both impaired driving-related and speed-related fatalities in 2014.  In addition, a 2014 survey by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health found that more than one-third of licensed Ontario students in Grades 10 to 12 admitted to having texted while driving at least once in the previous year.  If you are a parent, please think of the example you are setting for your children and don’t text while driving.

The new Ontario legislation is good for public safety.  The new  penalty , combined with growing public awareness of the dangers of texting while driving, will greatly lower the incidence of this high risk driving behaviour.

Receiving demerit points can put you in the high risk auto insurance category and this can mean extremely high  and cost prohibitative auto insurance premiums, and, in severe cases, even  the loss of your license if you have accumulated a lot of demerit points.
